Berberine for your skin?

Berberine for your skin?

Berberine is a totally fascinating compound that you may have heard about on social media lately. People are referring to berberine supplements as “nature’s oz**pic” But interestingly, berberine as a part of your topical skincare routine is a fantastic way to tackle acne prone skin and the issues that we can experience.

So firstly, what is Berberine?

Well, it is a natural plant alkaloid found in herbs like goldenseal (one of the core ingredients in my Acne Clear Cream), barberry, and Oregon grape, and while it's most commonly taken internally for things like blood sugar and inflammation, it also has some remarkable topical benefits.

Here’s how it helps:

1. Antibacterial action

Berberine is naturally antimicrobial. It helps kill & inhibit the growth of acne-causing bacteria like Cutibacterium acnes. This can reduce the number and severity of breakouts and stop the cycle of inflammation.

2. Anti-inflammatory benefits

Acne isn’t just about bacteria. It's also driven by inflammation in our skin. Berberine calms inflamed skin, helping reduce redness, swelling, and tenderness in the active pimples, which is especially helpful if you experience cystic acne or have fair skin & post-inflammatory erythema (the stubborn red blemishes left behind).

3. Oil regulation

Berberine can also help regulate sebum production, which is key in preventing clogged pores. Clogged pores full of build up are one of the first steps in the acne process.

4. Barrier support + wound healing

Berberine supports and accelerates our skin healing. This is key for our skin’s recovery from blemishes and reduces the risk of scarring. Its antioxidant profile also protects the skin from further damage.

5. Helps with skin sensitivity

Many of us who are acne-prone also deal with sensitivity or a compromised skin barrier. Because berberine is gentle and plant-based, it offers anti-acne action without stripping our skin. This means it is ideal for reactive skin types.

So if you’re on an acne busting journey and want to get effective, yet gentle ingredients into your regimen that won’t damage your skin barrier, try out Berberine & experience the amazing results it delivers!
