Dark spots from ingrown hairs?

Dark spots from ingrown hairs?

Have you ever noticed an ingrown hair develop somewhere on your body, perhaps on your legs from shaving, or on your bikini line, or even under your arm, then next thing you know there is this huge dark spot that has developed? You may notice that this dark spot sticks around for weeks or months longer than the initial ingrown hair did. The dark spot that appears on your skin after an ingrown hair is caused by post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

The reason that these PIH spots can happen is when the hair gets trapped under the skin, it triggers inflammation, leading to redness, swelling, and irritation. This inflammatory response within our skin stimulates melanocytes, the skin cells responsible for producing pigment (melanin). This causes them to release excess melanin in the inflamed and agitated area of our skin. As a result, even after the ingrown hair heals, you can be left with a dark spot where the irritation occurred.

Now there are in fact a few things that can certainly make post-ingrown hair dark spots worse;

- Skin picking or squeezing the ingrown hair, which increases inflammation and worsens pigmentation.

- Sun exposure, which darkens PIH spots due to UV stimulation of melanin production.

- Naturally higher melanin levels, making PIH more pronounced in medium to deep skin tones.

There are a few things you can do though to help to avoid the ingrown hairs, PLUS also assist with preventing & fading the PIH.

Firstly, you know what I am going to say… SPF

If you know you are prone to these kinds of spots, don’t go out in the direct sun without SPF on all exposed skin.

Now interestingly, as much as the Perfect Skin Kit has not in fact been specifically formulated for targeting ingrown hairs, it does have some properties that actually assist with this to a degree.

It contains White Willow Bark, which is a natural salicylic acid. It gently exfoliates from within to keep pores clear, preventing ingrown hairs while also helping to fade dark spots by encouraging skin cell turnover.

When ir comes to the PIH these are the best compounds to face & prevent it gently & naturally from within;

Zinc

It helps with wound healing, reduces inflammation, and supports skin regeneration, making it essential for preventing infected ingrown hairs and minimizing pigmentation after healing.

Vitamin C

This plays a key role in collagen production, helping to repair skin after ingrown hairs and lighten PIH by reducing melanin overproduction in inflamed areas.

Licorice Root Extract

Our beloved natural brightening agent that reduces hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanin production and soothing inflammation, helping fade dark spots from past ingrown hairs.

Polypodium Leucotomos Leaf Extract

This powerful plant derived antioxidant is known to protect against UV-induced pigmentation and reduce skin inflammation, helping to prevent dark spots from worsening.

Hyaluronic Acid

This works from within to keep the skin hydrated and plump. This is a key factor to prevent hair from curling under the skin and reduces the risk of ingrown hairs forming. Additionally, it also assists in faster skin healing after irritation.

So by nourishing our skin from within we can not only help to fade away and prevent these darkened spots, but also even prevent the actual cause of them!
